How Big Does Each Bay Need to Be?
A bay is the working footprint around one lift: the lift itself, the clearance to open both car doors, room to swing the lift arms out empty, and a walk-around lane. Skimp on any of those and the bay technically holds a car but is miserable to work in.
Rule of thumb: plan for a bay about 12 ft wide and 22 to 24 ft deep for a single mid-size vehicle on a two-post lift →. That width gives you roughly 3 ft on each side of a 6 ft wide car, which is the difference between opening a door fully and dinging it on the column every time. Depth covers the car length plus room to walk behind it and stage a tool cart.
Two-post lifts need the most thought on width because the columns sit beside the vehicle. Four-post lifts are more forgiving side to side but eat more length because of the runways and approach ramps. If you are running trucks or dually pickups, add 2 ft of width and 3 to 4 ft of depth per bay so longer wheelbases and wide mirrors are not fighting the next bay over.
Ceiling height is the spec people get burned on most. A standard two-post lift wants 11 to 12 ft of clear ceiling to raise a typical SUV to full height with the arms up. Where to Put the Lift
The lift is the anchor of the entire layout, so it gets placed first. Three things drive where it goes: the concrete under it, the path a car takes to reach it, and the clearance above and around it.
Concrete first. A two-post lift needs a solid, flat, properly cured slab. The common spec is at least 4 in. of 3,000 PSI concrete, with some heavier-capacity units calling for thicker or reinforced pours. Place the lift where the slab actually meets spec, not where the open floor happens to be. If your slab is thin, cracked, or post-tension, that constrains placement and may need a remedy before anchoring.
Drive path second. A car has to get onto the lift in a straight, low-effort shot from the overhead door. Set the lift so the approach lane lines up with the door opening and there is enough run-in to straighten the car before it reaches the posts. Tucking a two-post into a back corner where you have to three-point-turn a car onto it is a daily annoyance that never goes away.
Clearance third. Leave room to swing the arms out fully when the lift is empty, open both doors at the lowest raised position, and walk a full loop around the vehicle. For two or more bays, the columns of adjacent lifts should not crowd each other; keep at least a couple of feet between a raised car and the next column so a swung-open door has somewhere to go.
Spreading the cost of a quality lift across paychecks is common for shop builds, and it does not have to change where you put the lift.
Designing Around Workflow
Once the bays are placed, the rest of the shop is about minimizing steps. Think about the path a job actually takes: car comes in, goes up, parts and tools come to it, waste goes out. The fewer feet you walk per repeat task, the more cars you turn.
Keep the heavy, repeated tools close. A rolling tool cart, the most-used hand tools, and a trash and fluid-catch station belong within a step or two of each lift. Air drops and a reel should land at the lift, not across the room. The goal is to stand at the car and reach what you need without crossing a traffic lane.
Push slow stuff to the perimeter. Parts washers, presses, the tire machine and balancer, the workbench, and bulk storage line the walls. They get used in bursts, not continuously, so they do not need prime center-floor real estate. A solid workbench against the wall with a pegboard or tool wall above it keeps the bay floor clear.
Protect the traffic lane. The lane a car drives in on is sacred. Do not let a workbench, a cabinet, or a creeper migrate into it. A blocked lane means you shuffle the whole floor every time a car comes or goes. Utilities are cheap to rough in before the floor is full and expensive to add later. Plan them around the bays you just placed.
Electrical. Most single-phase two-post and four-post lifts run on a 220V circuit; many home-garage models are happy on a dedicated 20 to 30 amp 220V line. Single-bay home garage (roughly 24 x 24 ft)
One two-post lift centered on the strongest part of the slab, lined up with the overhead door. Workbench and tool wall on the back wall, rolling cart at the lift, air compressor in a back corner with one reel drop at the lift. This is the classic enthusiast setup: enough room for one car up and one project on the bench, with a clear drive-in lane down the middle.
Two-bay light-commercial shop (roughly 30 x 40 ft)
Two two-post lifts side by side with a shared center lane wide enough to walk and roll a jack between them. Tire machine and balancer along one side wall, parts and bulk storage along the other, workbench at the back. This layout turns real volume while keeping both lifts loadable from a single door. Add a four-post in place of one two-post if storage or alignment work is a big part of the mix.
Three-bay shop (roughly 40 x 60 ft)
Three bays in a row: two two-post bays for general repair and one four-post bay for storage, alignment, or heavy trucks. Dedicated tire-and-wheel station, a real parts room or wall of cabinets, and a separate workbench area away from the lifts. At this size, keep the drive lanes generous; the cost of "wasted" lane space is far lower than the cost of bays you cannot load efficiently.
Common Layout Mistakes to Avoid
Most painful shop layouts share the same handful of errors. Designing around them up front costs nothing; fixing them later means moving a lift or re-pouring concrete.
Building the layout around the walls instead of the bays. People measure the room, line the walls with benches and cabinets, and then squeeze a lift into whatever is left. That backwards order is how you end up with a lift you cannot load straight. Place the bays and drive lanes first, every time.
Underestimating door-swing and arm-swing clearance. A bay that fits the car on paper still fails if you cannot open the doors or swing the arms out empty. Always design to the widest realistic vehicle and the fully-open door, not the car sitting still with doors shut.
Putting the lift on questionable concrete. Anchoring a two-post into thin, cracked, or unknown-thickness slab is the single most dangerous shortcut in a shop build. Confirm slab thickness and condition before you pick the spot, and remedy it if needed.
One air outlet for the whole shop. A single compressor outlet means a long hose snaking across your traffic lane. Drop hard air lines to each bay and the bench instead; it is cheap during the build and a constant aggravation to retrofit.
Forgetting future growth. If there is any chance you add a second lift, rough in the slab and a 220V circuit for it now.
