Why ALI ETL matters

Four reasons ALI certification is mandatory for pro shops and recommended for serious home garages.

State & local code

Most US states require ALI ETL for commercial vehicle lift use. California, New York, and most large markets specifically reference the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard in their commercial lift codes.

🛡

Insurance compliance

Commercial business insurance carriers almost universally require ALI ETL on shop lifts. Non-certified lifts can void coverage in the event of injury or property damage claims.

📜

Recognized by OSHA

The ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard is the only lift safety standard OSHA references for commercial automotive lift use. Required if your shop is subject to OSHA inspection.

Required for alignment work

Hunter, John Bean, and most other wheel alignment system manufacturers require ALI certified lifts for alignment system warranty. Required for ALI Alignment-Rack certification.

ALI Certified Lift FAQs

The most common questions our lift specialists get specifically about ALI ETL certification.

What does ALI ETL certified mean?

ALI ETL certification means a lift has been third-party tested by Intertek (the "ETL" part) to meet the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard — the industry safety standard for automotive lifts published by the Automotive Lift Institute. Certified lifts carry a gold ALI Certification Label on the data plate as proof.

It's the only third-party automotive lift safety certification recognized by OSHA, commercial insurance carriers, ANSI, and most US state and municipal codes for commercial vehicle service.

Do I legally need an ALI certified lift?

For commercial use: Yes, in most US states. Most state and local commercial vehicle service codes reference the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard. California, New York, Texas, Florida, and most major markets require ALI ETL for shops charging customers for vehicle lift service. Check with your state and city codes for specifics.

For commercial insurance: Almost always. Commercial business insurance carriers require ALI ETL on shop lifts in nearly all policies. Non-certified lifts can void coverage in the event of injury or property damage claims.

For home use: No. Homeowner insurance does not typically require ALI certification, though some carriers may offer a small discount for certified lifts. Non-certified lifts from reputable brands are widely used in home garages.

Does ALI certification expire?

ALI certifies the lift model design — not each individual lift indefinitely. Once a model is ALI certified, every unit of that model shipped under that certification is considered certified for life.

However, annual inspection by an ALI-certified inspector is required to maintain commercial compliance in most jurisdictions. The inspection confirms the lift is in safe operating condition, hasn't been modified, and that maintenance is current. The inspector adds a yearly inspection sticker to the lift. Most insurance carriers require proof of annual ALI inspection for coverage.

How do I find an ALI certified inspector?

The Automotive Lift Institute maintains a national directory of certified lift inspectors at autolift.org. Search by ZIP code to find an inspector in your area. Most inspections run $150-$400 per lift annually.

Some larger manufacturers (Atlas, AMGO) also coordinate ALI inspections through dealer networks. Call (470) 208-2754 if you need help finding a local inspector after purchase.

Are ALI certified lifts more expensive?

Yes, typically 15-30% more than equivalent non-certified lifts from the same manufacturer. The premium pays for third-party testing costs, more rigorous QC during manufacturing, and the ALI label/certification documentation.

For commercial use, the price difference is offset many times over by insurance compliance, code compliance, and protection against liability claims. For home use, the price difference is usually not worth it unless your homeowner insurance offers a meaningful discount.

Can I retrofit a non-ALI lift to become ALI certified?

No. ALI ETL certification is granted by Intertek based on testing the manufacturer's lift design and production process. A specific lift model is either ALI certified by design or it is not — you cannot retrofit certification onto a non-certified unit.

If you have a non-ALI lift and need to upgrade for commercial use, the path is to buy an ALI certified replacement lift. We can credit your existing lift toward a new ALI purchase in some cases — call (470) 208-2754 for trade-in pricing.

What's the ALI "Gold Label"?

The ALI Gold Label is the official ALI certification sticker affixed to the data plate of every ALI ETL certified lift. It's printed in gold on a black background and includes the lift model number, certification date, and the ALI logo.

Look for the Gold Label as proof of certification — without it, you cannot demonstrate ALI compliance to insurance carriers or inspectors. Every product on this collection page ships with a Gold Label installed from the factory.

What's "ALI Alignment-Rack Certified"?

A separate sub-certification for alignment lifts. The ALI Alignment-Rack standard (ANSI/ALI ALOIM) requires the alignment lift to meet ANSI/ALI ALCTV for general lift safety, AND additional alignment-specific geometric requirements (turn-plate accuracy, slip-plate function, runway level tolerance).

Most alignment system manufacturers (Hunter, John Bean, Bosch) require ALI Alignment-Rack certified lifts for alignment system warranty. If you're running a real alignment shop, look for Alignment-Rack certified lifts specifically. Several Atlas PVL alignment models and the iDEAL FP14KAC-X meet this standard.

Does Atlas Platinum mean ALI certified?

Mostly yes, but not always. Atlas has multiple product lines. The Platinum line (PVL series) is Atlas's ALI ETL certified line — every PVL model carries ALI certification. Atlas's other lines (BP, OHX, ATTD series) may or may not be ALI certified depending on the specific model.

If you need ALI certification from Atlas, look for "Platinum" or "PVL" in the product title or the "ALI Certified" callout. We've filtered this collection to only show ALI ETL certified Atlas models.

Are all AMGO PRO lifts ALI certified?

Most are, but not all. AMGO's commercial PRO line carries ALI ETL certification on the majority of models (PRO-12ASX, PRO-14E, PRO-18, PRO-30, PRO-40, and the alignment variants). AMGO's BP entry line and some hobbyist-focused models are not ALI certified.

If you're shopping AMGO specifically for ALI compliance, the safest path is to filter the AMGO collection by ALI tag or call us at (470) 208-2754 to verify before ordering. Every AMGO model on this ALI Certified Lifts page is verified ALI ETL.

Can I use an ALI certified lift in my home garage?

Absolutely. ALI certification is a safety standard, not a use restriction. An ALI certified lift is built to higher safety standards than non-certified lifts, which is a benefit for any user including home enthusiasts. The downside is just price — you pay a premium for certification you may not strictly need for home use.

The Atlas Apex 8 (8K hobbyist 4-post) is specifically designed for home garage use AND carries ALI certification. The "best of both worlds" pick for serious enthusiasts who want pro-grade safety without commercial pricing.

What's the warranty on ALI certified lifts?

Warranties vary by brand. Atlas Platinum: 2 years parts and labor on most PVL models. iDEAL: 2 years structural plus separate hydraulic and wear coverage. AMGO PRO: 5 years structural, 2 years hydraulic, 1 year wear — the longest structural warranty in our ALI lineup.

All warranties are direct from manufacturer. Pitstop Pro handles claims as the authorized dealer.
