What Is a Reach Truck? Types, Uses, and How It Works

Short version: a reach truck is an electric, indoor-only lift truck built for one job, which is putting pallets into tall racking in aisles too narrow for a regular forklift. What makes it a reach truck rather than a forklift is the mechanism in the name: the forks travel forward into the rack while the machine body stays put in the aisle.
That single design choice is the whole point. A sit-down counterbalance forklift has to physically drive its front wheels up to the rack face to place a pallet, so it needs 12 to 13 feet of aisle to turn and square up. A reach truck reaches instead of driving, so it works in roughly 8 to 10 feet. Recover 3 or 4 feet from every aisle in a building and you get 20 to 30 percent more pallet positions on a floor you are already paying rent on.

What a Reach Truck Actually Is
A reach truck is a battery-powered industrial lift truck designed for high-density pallet storage indoors. OSHA files it under Class II, electric motor narrow aisle trucks, alongside order pickers and side-loaders. That classification is not trivia. It determines how your operators have to be trained, and we will come back to it.
Three traits define the category:
- The forks extend, the machine does not. A reach carriage moves the forks forward past the front of the truck, typically 19 to 23 inches, so the load goes into the rack while the chassis stays in the aisle.
- Outriggers instead of a counterweight. Two legs run forward under the load and carry it, which is why a reach truck weighing 4,500 lb can hold 3,300 lb at height. A counterbalance forklift needs a massive rear counterweight to do the same thing, and that weight is what makes it long.
- It goes high. Ordinary counterbalance forklifts commonly top out around 185 to 216 inches. Reach trucks routinely pass that, and the tallest unit we stock reaches 275 inches, just under 23 feet.
Put plainly: a reach truck is what you buy when your racking got taller and your aisles got narrower, and the forklift that used to work no longer fits.
How the Reach Mechanism Works
There are two ways manufacturers get the forks out over the load, and the difference matters more than the spec sheet suggests.
Moving mast
The entire mast assembly rides forward on rails set into the outriggers. It is mechanically simple, it holds capacity well, and because the mast carries the load close to the truck it tends to stay stable at height. The limitation is depth. A moving mast reaches one pallet deep and will not serve double-deep racking without fork extensions.
Pantograph
A scissor linkage between the mast and the fork carriage extends the forks while the mast stays fixed. The advantage is travel: a pantograph can be built to reach two pallets deep, which is what double-deep racking requires. The trade-off is that capacity falls off further as the linkage extends, and there are more moving parts to service.
Rule of thumb: if your racking is single-deep selective, which most racking is, a moving mast is the simpler and usually cheaper machine. Only go pantograph if you are genuinely running double-deep, because you are paying for reach depth you would otherwise never use.
The Types, and Which One You Need
Walkie reach truck
The operator walks behind and steers with a tiller handle. No platform, no seat. These are the entry point to the category and they are much cheaper than ride-on machines, which surprises people who assume walkie means underpowered. The units we stock lift 3,300 lb and the tallest walkie in the line reaches 216 inches, which is higher than most counterbalance forklifts manage.
Walkies suit operations that move a few dozen pallets a shift rather than a few hundred. Travel speed is walking speed, so throughput is the constraint, not lifting ability.
Stand-up rider reach truck
The operator rides on a platform, standing, usually facing sideways so the same posture works travelling in both directions. This is the machine most people picture when they hear reach truck. It moves at vehicle speed, so throughput climbs sharply, and the sideways stance means the operator is not craning their neck for eight hours.

Double-deep reach truck
A pantograph machine with enough extension to place and retrieve the second pallet in a double-deep rack bay. It raises storage density further but commits you to last-in-first-out inventory flow, since the back pallet is trapped behind the front one. Good for lots of the same SKU. Bad for mixed inventory with real date rotation.
Straddle reach truck
The outriggers are set wide enough to straddle the pallet rather than pass under the rack beams. It is stable and it is simple, but the wide legs mean pallets cannot sit as close together, which quietly gives back some of the density you bought the machine to gain. Worth knowing it exists, rarely the right answer if a standard reach configuration will serve.
Reach Truck vs Forklift vs Everything Else
Four machines get confused with each other constantly. Here is what separates them.

The distinction people get wrong most often is reach truck versus order picker. They look similar and they share the same OSHA class. The difference is who goes up. A reach truck lifts the pallet to the operator's line of sight and no further; the operator stays on the ground or on a fixed platform. An order picker lifts the operator up to the pallet so they can pick cases by hand, which is why it requires a harness and a very different training conversation.
If you are moving whole pallets, you want a reach truck. If you are breaking pallets down and picking cases at height, you want an order picker β. Buying the wrong one is an expensive mistake that shows up on day one.
Below the reach truck sits the straddle stacker β, which stacks but does not reach. It is a fraction of the price and the right call for stockrooms working under 12 feet.
The Aisle Math That Justifies It
Reach trucks are expensive machines and the case for one is almost never about lifting. It is about floor space.
Take a 100 ft deep building running standard 42-inch-deep pallet racking back to back. With a counterbalance forklift needing 13 ft aisles, you fit a certain number of rack rows. Drop the aisle to 9 ft because a reach truck no longer has to swing its body toward the rack face, and you claw back 4 ft per aisle. Across a building with six or seven aisles, that is another full row of racking, sometimes two.
The number the industry quotes is 20 to 30 percent more pallet positions versus a counterbalance-only operation, and it holds up under most layouts. Compare that against what warehouse space costs per square foot in your market and the machine frequently pays for itself in avoided expansion, not in labor.
The vertical side compounds it. A counterbalance forklift commonly stops around 185 to 216 inches. If your building has 28 ft of clear height and you are only using 16 ft of it, you are renting air. A reach truck reaching 275 inches turns that unused headroom into two more rack levels.

The obvious assumption is that the money buys height and reach. Check the table again, because that assumption is wrong.
The $26,999 walkie reaches 216 inches. The $46,199 stand-up rider reaches 196 inches. The cheaper machine goes 20 inches higher. Capacity climbs from 3,300 lb to 4,000 lb and reach distance from 19.7 to 22.44 inches, both real but modest gains for roughly $19,000.
Aisle performance does not explain it either. The walkie turns in a 63.4 inch radius against 75 inches for the stand-up, and its body is 32.3 inches wide against 54.72 inches. On paper, the cheap machine is the more maneuverable one.
So what does the extra $19,000 actually buy? Throughput and endurance, almost entirely. A rider travels at vehicle speed instead of walking speed, which is the difference between forty pallet moves a shift and two hundred. The operator stands on a sprung platform with electronic power steering rather than walking eight to ten miles a day behind a tiller. Across a full shift that is a labor-cost argument and a turnover argument, not a capability one.
The practical decision rule: count your moves per shift. Under roughly fifty, the walkie does the same work for half the money and turns tighter doing it. Above a hundred and fifty, the rider pays for itself in operator hours inside two years. In between, price the labor honestly and let the number decide.
What a Reach Truck Cannot Do
These machines are specialists, and the specialization cuts both ways. Buying one to be a general-purpose forklift is the most common and most expensive error in the category.
- It cannot go outside. Polyurethane wheels and low ground clearance mean smooth, dry, indoor concrete. Gravel, asphalt seams, weather, and dock plates will destroy the wheels and upset the machine.
- It does not like uneven floors. Anything lifting a load to 20-plus feet amplifies a floor defect enormously. A slab dip that a forklift shrugs off becomes a visible sway at the top of the mast.
- The outriggers get in the way at floor level. Legs running forward under the load are what let the machine skip the counterweight, and they also mean it cannot pick up a pallet sitting flush on the floor against a wall, or drive over an obstruction a counterbalance would clear.
- It is not a truck loader. Reach trucks do not drive into trailers. You still need a pallet jack or a counterbalance forklift at the dock, so a reach truck is usually an addition to the fleet rather than a replacement.
- Capacity falls as the forks extend and as you go up. A 4,000 lb rating is at a 24 inch load center at a stated height. Get the derate chart for your specific mast before assuming your heaviest pallet goes on the top beam.
If most of your work is dock-side, outdoors, or on mixed surfaces, the honest answer is that you want a counterbalance forklift β, not a reach truck, no matter how tall your racking is.
Three Numbers to Check Before You Order
Nearly every reach truck problem we get called about traces back to one of three measurements nobody took.
1. Lowered mast height against your door
This is the one that ruins days. The tall EK18RR has a lowered mast height of 123.27 inches, which is 10 ft 3 in. It does not fit through a 10 ft door. The 196-inch lithium model drops to 96.42 inches and the shorter walkies come in around 82 to 93 inches. Measure your lowest doorway, your sprinkler heads, and your lighting, then subtract before you shop.
2. Service weight against your slab
A loaded reach truck concentrates serious weight on a small footprint. The EK18RR weighs 9,330 lb empty, so with a full pallet you are moving well over 13,000 lb. The walkies are a different animal at 3,780 to 4,700 lb. If you have a mezzanine, an upper floor, or a slab you are unsure about, get the floor loading confirmed first. This is not a question to answer optimistically.
3. Right-angle stack aisle, not just clear aisle
The figure that matters is the aisle a machine needs to turn and square up to the rack with a pallet on the forks, not the width it needs to drive down. Manufacturers publish it. Ask for it in writing for the exact mast and fork configuration you are quoting, and add clearance on top rather than building to the minimum.
Training and the OSHA Class
Reach trucks sit in OSHA Class II, electric motor narrow aisle trucks. Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), operators must be trained and evaluated on the specific type of truck they run before operating it independently, with a re-evaluation at least every three years.
The part that catches people out is that certification is truck-specific. An operator certified on your sit-down counterbalance forklift is not thereby certified on a reach truck. The controls, the visibility, the stance, and the load dynamics at 20 feet are different enough that OSHA treats them as separate equipment. Budget the training time when you budget the machine.
Three habits separate crews that never have an incident from crews that do: travel with the forks low and the mast retracted, never reach and travel at the same time, and slow down before turns rather than during them. None of that is in the manual as a rule. All of it shows up in the incident reports.
