2-Post Lift Electrical Requirements: Wiring & Breaker Size

Bottom line: almost every 2-post lift sold in North America runs on 220V single-phase, 60 Hz power, on its own dedicated circuit. Plan on a 25 or 30 amp double-pole breaker and 10-gauge wire for a typical 2 HP power unit. That is the whole answer for 90% of home garages and small shops.

The part that trips people up is not the voltage. It is everything around it: whether your garage panel has room, whether you can share a circuit with the compressor (you cannot), what wire gauge to pull for a long run, and whether your lift shipped with a plug or bare leads. The Short Answer: What Every 2-Post Lift Needs

Here is the spec sheet in one block. If you print one thing from this page and hand it to your electrician, print this.

  • Voltage: 220V (also written 208V, 230V, or 240V, they are the same nominal service in a residential or light-commercial panel)
  • Frequency: 60 Hz
  • Phase: single-phase for virtually every home-garage and small-shop 2-post lift

Rule of thumb: if your garage already has a 220V circuit feeding a welder or a dryer, you are most of the way there electrically. If your garage has nothing but 110V wall outlets, budget for an electrician before the lift lands on your driveway.

The single most common scheduling failure we see is a customer who takes delivery of a 1,300 lb lift, gets it bolted to the slab, and then discovers the nearest 220V outlet is in the laundry room. Get the circuit run before the freight truck shows up.

220V vs 110V: Why Almost No 2-Post Runs on Household Power

A 2 HP hydraulic power unit under load pulls somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 to 24 amps at 220V. Run that same motor on 110V and the current roughly doubles, which is why 110V 2-post lifts are essentially not a thing. The motor would need 40-plus amps, the starting surge would be brutal, and you would be running very heavy conductors to get there. Manufacturers skip the problem entirely and spec 220V.

Single-Phase vs Three-Phase

Short version: you want single-phase. Unless you are wiring a commercial building that already has three-phase service coming off the utility transformer, single-phase is the correct and only practical choice.

Three-phase power is a commercial service type. It delivers power more smoothly and lets a motor of a given horsepower run cooler and draw less current per leg. Real shops with three-phase service do sometimes order three-phase power units, and most manufacturers will build one. But three-phase is not something you add to a house. Getting it pulled to a residential address, when the utility will even do it, is a five-figure conversation.

How to tell what you have: open your panel door and look at the main breaker. Two hot legs feeding a double-pole main is single-phase. Three hot legs and a three-pole main is three-phase. In a house, it is single-phase. Full stop.

Breaker Size and Wire Gauge

This is where the real questions live, and where guessing costs money.

Breaker

A 2 HP single-phase motor at 220V has a full-load current in the low 20-amp range and a starting surge well above that. You need a breaker big enough to survive the inrush without nuisance-tripping, but small enough to actually protect the conductors.

A 30-amp double-pole breaker is the standard answer. Some manufacturers spec 25 amp; 30 amp is more common and gives you headroom on startup. Our Katool KT-4H110 documentation calls for a 30-amp breaker with 10-gauge wire, and that pairing is the safe default across the 2-post category too.

It must be a double-pole breaker, meaning it occupies two slots in the panel and switches both hot legs together. A pair of single-pole breakers is not the same thing and is not acceptable.

Wire gauge

Wire gauge is a function of current and distance. Amperage sets the floor; voltage drop over a long run is what forces you up a size.

  • Under ~50 feet of run: 10-gauge copper is correct for a 30-amp circuit.
  • 50 to 100 feet: go to 8-gauge. Voltage drop on a long 10-gauge run starves the motor, and a starved motor runs hot, lifts slowly, and dies early.
  • Over 100 feet: have the electrician calculate it. Do not eyeball it. This is exactly the situation where a detached garage 120 feet from the house panel eats a lift motor in eighteen months.

Red flag: if your lift takes noticeably longer to reach full height than the manufacturer's rated cycle time, and it gets worse when other things in the garage are running, you almost certainly have a voltage-drop problem, not a hydraulic one. Why the Circuit Has to Be Dedicated

"Dedicated" means one circuit, one breaker, one load: the lift. Nothing else shares it.

People push back on this because they already have a 220V circuit out there for the welder or the compressor, and adding a second one is real money. We understand the impulse. Do not do it.

Here is why. Your air compressor and your lift both draw a large inrush current at startup. If the compressor kicks on while the lift motor is already loaded and climbing, the combined draw trips the breaker. Now you have a car suspended in the air and a dead circuit. The lift will hold, the mechanical safety locks are doing their job and the car is not going anywhere, but you have turned a routine job into a problem you have to solve while standing under two tons of vehicle. That is a bad afternoon and an entirely avoidable one.

A dedicated circuit also means that when something does go wrong electrically, you know exactly where to look. Shared circuits turn a five-minute diagnosis into an hour of pulling things off one at a time.

Plug or Hardwire? Outlets, Cords, and Disconnects

Most 2-post lifts ship with the power unit wired to the motor and a set of bare leads at the other end. There is no plug on the box. What happens next is up to you and your electrician, and there are two legitimate paths.

Option 1: hardwire to a disconnect

This is what commercial installs almost always do, and it is what we recommend. Wire from the breaker to a lockable disconnect switch mounted on the wall within sight of the lift, then from the disconnect to the power unit. The disconnect gives you a hard, positive way to kill power to the lift before anyone puts a wrench near it. If your shop ever gets an OSHA visit, this is the setup they want to see.

Option 2: cord and plug to a 220V outlet

Perfectly acceptable for home garages, and it is what a lot of enthusiasts do. Have the electrician install a 220V receptacle (a NEMA 6-30 or similar, matched to the breaker) near where the power unit column will stand, then fit a matching cord and plug to the power unit leads. The advantage is that unplugging the lift is trivially easy, and if you ever move the lift, you are not re-wiring.

Whichever route you take: the power unit column is the one you have to plan around. Decide which column carries the power unit before the lift is anchored, because that decision fixes where the electrical has to terminate, and you cannot move an anchored column without pulling every bolt.

Grounding

The lift must be grounded. Every one of these power units has a ground lug or green lead and it is not optional. A hydraulic lift is a large steel structure with a motor on it, sitting on a concrete floor, in a room where people spill fluids. Ground it properly. Your electrician will do this without being asked, which is one more argument for hiring one.

Do You Need an Electrician, and What Does It Cost?

Yes, unless you are a licensed electrician yourself. Running a new 220V branch circuit is not a beginner DIY job, and in most jurisdictions it requires a permit and an inspection. Insurance companies have denied garage-fire claims over unpermitted 220V work. It is not a corner worth cutting on a $2,000 to $4,500 lift purchase.

Five Electrical Mistakes We See Every Month

1. Sharing the circuit with the compressor

Covered above, but it is the number one call we get. Two big inductive loads, one breaker, guaranteed trip. Run the second circuit.

2. Undersized wire on a long run

10-gauge is right for a short run and wrong for a 90-foot one. The lift will work at first. It will lift slowly, the motor will run hot, and it will fail early. This is the mistake with the longest delay between cause and symptom, which is exactly what makes it expensive.

3. Assuming the lift comes with a plug

It almost never does. Budget the cord, the plug, and the receptacle, or budget the disconnect. Either way, that hardware is on you, not in the crate.

4. Wiring the circuit before deciding which column gets the power unit

The power unit mounts to one specific column. If you run the circuit to the wrong side of the bay, you are either extending the run or re-anchoring the lift. Sort the layout, then call the electrician.

5. Skipping the permit

A permit for a 220V branch circuit is cheap and fast. The inspection catches the one thing your electrician got wrong, which is the entire point. Skipping it saves you a hundred dollars and puts your homeowner's insurance in play if anything ever burns.

Troubleshooting: The Lift Hums but Will Not Rise

Electrical symptoms on a 2-post lift are fairly diagnostic. Here is how to read them.

Motor hums, lift does not move: classic single-leg failure. One of your two hot legs is dead, or you have a bad connection at the breaker or the disconnect. The motor is getting enough current to buzz and not enough to turn. Kill the power and have your electrician meter both legs at the power unit. Do not keep pressing the button; a humming motor is a stalled motor, and a stalled motor cooks itself in about a minute.

Breaker trips on startup, every time: undersized breaker, or a shared circuit, or a failing motor start capacitor. Check in that order.

Lift rises but slowly, and the motor sounds strained: voltage drop. Long run, thin wire. Meter the voltage at the power unit while the lift is climbing, not at rest. A reading that sags well below 220V under load confirms it.

Nothing at all, no hum, no click: start at the breaker and work toward the lift. Breaker, disconnect, cord, then the power unit's own switch. It is almost always the boring answer.

One important safety note: if a lift with a car on it loses power mid-cycle, the car is not in danger of falling. Cables on a well-maintained 2-post are designed with substantial safety factors. Even on cable-equalized designs, the cables work in tension within rated limits, and the mechanical safety locks catch any failure. The correct move is to lower the lift onto its locks if it is not already resting on them, then sort the electrical problem out. Do not improvise with jacks and blocks under a suspended vehicle because you are impatient to get the car down.

Does the electrical work need a permit?
